Constructed in 1957, Yuma Regional Medical Center is home to a growing community that had outgrown its medical resource, leaving a need for an expansion of the Emergency Department. In three-years, the design team was able to expand the facility to 71,000+ SF, add a three-level parking garage to alleviate pedestrian traffic and parking issues, and relocate the central utility plant to an area that allows for future growth.

The need to update and expand the emergency department and central utility plant at Yuma Regional Medical Center was no ordinary project for the design team. The team designed and constructed around the fully operational hospital; the project required some creative methods to minimize noise, vibrations and the risk to patients, staff and visitors. The update to the land-locked hospital was completed in 13-phases by employing an Integrated Project Delivery model that made for a more efficient construction process; since it was incorporated early on in the design stages this method saved the client time and cost.
