In 2017, Smith Brasher Hall underwent a major renovation and expansion to consolidate CNMCC’s School of Business and Information Technology programs in one location. The new 85,438 square-foot building is designed for 21st century learning, with high-tech classrooms, interactive network/computer labs, and areas for students and faculty to gather and collaborate. Smith Brasher is anticipated to earn LEED Gold certification. The design incorporates many sustainable features including a geothermal heating and cooling system, LED lighting and control systems and exterior solar shade structures. The project design also created high thermal comfort, improved indoor air quality and quiet learning environments for the building occupants.

The geothermal system takes advantage of earth’s balanced energy to cool and heat the building. The geothermal piping network is composed of 160 boreholes drilled to a vertical depth of 300 feet and spaced horizontally 25 feet apart under the building’s south and west parking areas. The geothermal loop is connected to the building’s heat pumps that have refrigeration compressors and fans that provide heating and cooling to the spaces. Advantages of the project design include substantial energy and cost savings, reduced peak power demand, and reduced pollution emissions.
